Harold E. Baker

Harold Eugene Baker, formerly of Trenton , Nebraska , died Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at the Brighton Care Center in Brighton , Colorado , at the age of 87 years.

Before Hal was born, the devastating Republican River flood of 1935 washed everything away including the roads leading to doctors. So Hal’s mother, Inez Tecker, had no alternative but to travel by train to her family in Lincoln , Nebraska where Hal was born in a hospital on August 13, 1936.  A month or so later, his father, Ned Tecker, was able to travel to Lincoln to meet his new son and take his family safely home.
Like his father, Hal lived his entire life on Tecker Ranch near Parks, Nebraska . Until he was eighteen, every summer was spent at Forest Inn near Estes Park , Colorado where he helped with the family business guiding hiking and fishing expeditions. In high school, he excelled in sports. His senior year, he contracted polio which put an end to his dreams of playing college football. He furthered his education at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln , Nebraska . Then in 1958, he enlisted in the Army National Guard.

He served on the Hester Foundation Board and he recently retired from the Southwest Public Power District board of directors after 16 years of service.
Throughout his lifetime, several awards were bestowed upon Hal and his family. Being selected as the grand marshals of the 2004 Dundy County Fair was a very special honor for Hal and Doris. Some of the more recent distinctions include being chosen the 2008 Master Conservationist for Production Agriculture sponsored by the Omaha World Herald and UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Tecker Ranch is also the recipient of the 2008 Nebraska Outstanding Grassland Conservation award.
Some of his favorite days on earth were spent showing his children the best places to fish along the Big Thompson River in Colorado . He also had many fond memories of his wild adventures with his fishing buddies on the Green River in Utah . The last few years he had many cherished trips with Doris to their cabin at Rams Horn Village in Estes Park , Colorado .
He loved the family ranch where over the years he devoted much of his time raising sheep, hogs, and cattle. Hal was an inspiration to his family and all who knew him. His generosity and virtues profoundly touched the hearts and lives of the many whose paths he crossed.
