Glen M. Osborn

Glen M. Osborn was born January 1, 1919, in rural Dundy County , Nebraska , to Orlando and Freda (Gunther) Osborn. He was a typical farm boy—he learned at an early age to help his parents by milking cows, driving the horses, feeding the chickens, and hauling cobs.
Glen’s life changed when his mother died when he was 5 years old. He often worked along side his father, and in February of 1929, when he was 10 years old, Glen was riding with his dad on a wagon when the horses spooked. Glen stayed with the wagon and his dad went with the run-away horses. Suddenly, Glen and his sisters were without parents. Their Uncle Ora and Aunt Agnes took them in and cared for them.
Glen, being the strong-willed and persistent person that he was, would get up every morning, do his chores and get himself to school. He decided he could take care of the farm by himself, but at night people would ride through the yard, shooting guns and making noise, killing his chickens and his pet goat. Glen carried buckshot in his leg from one of these incidents. Glen’s Uncle Ora protected him and he held onto his family’s land.
Glen rode the school bus to high school and liked to tell stories about riding the bus in the winter with the stove in the middle and blankets under the seats. When he was 16 and the dust bowl days were over, Glen decided that he wanted to farm. He found his planter sunk in a lagoon, with only the seat above water, and a neighbor loaned him a horse so he could get his first crop planted. Glen never talked much about his childhood until his grand-daughter Erin interviewed him for a college project. Following that he was interviewed on the NPR show All Things Considered.
In 1940 Glen married Vivian Bradley.  They were blessed with two children—Jim and Glenda. Their grandchildren always loved the story of how they eloped to St. Francis in 2 cars. When the newlyweds returned to their farm north of Benkelman, Glen sold a cow so he could buy his bride a Home Comfort cook stove. They enjoyed celebrating their wedding anniversaries with family and friends and in December they would have celebrated their 68th anniversary. One of Glen’s greatest comforts in his later years was cuddling up with his Vivian on his lap under his favorite Husker blanket.
Glen loved all sports but he had a special spot in his heart for the Cardinals and the Huskers.  He spent many hours playing catch with Jim and with his grandchildren. Glen liked to entertain his grandchildren by showing them how he could kick the top of a door frame or by reciting Latin.  He also told them stories about ice skating from Twin Lakes to town and about riding a buggy down the Twin Lakes hill without a horse – with Lawrence Baney steering and Glen holding on for dear life.
His great love and never ending pride was his farm. Watching the corn and wheat break through the soil, seeing a newborn calf take its first breath and walking the land brought him tremendous joy and satisfaction. Glen believed you could tell the measure of a man by how hard he worked and if he kept his word. A handshake sealed a deal. When neighbors needed a helping hand he was always one of the first ones there. And he taught these values to his children and grandchildren.
Glen passed from this life on Monday, September 22, 2008 at Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman, at the age of 89 years, 8 months, and 21 days.  He was a member of the Benkelman United Presbyterian Church and took great pride in the work he did for the church and its congregation.
Although it seemed that he retired, he was still driving a harvest truck when he was 87 and only last week remarked that he was ready to work up a sweat helping drill wheat.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Elva and Edna and grand-daughter April Osborn.
Glen will be missed by his wife, Vivian; his son Jim and his wife Lynne of Benkelman and their children Stephanie and Chris Baum and Jacob of Lincoln, Erin and Patrice Maillet of Rueil-Malmaison, France, Bradley and Amanda Osborn of Lincoln; his daughter Glenda Campbell of Lincoln and her family Mike Campbell, Tonya and Ryan Peck, Josh and Alli of Fort Mill, South Carolina and Carma and Brad Bryan, Macey and Miya of Lincoln; and countless relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends for visitation and viewing on Thursday, September 25, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Forch Funeral Chapel in Benkelman.
Funeral services will be Friday, September 26, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Marcine Farmer, PMA, officiating.  Interment will follow services at the Benkelman Cemetery .
Memorials are being accepted in his name.
Arrangements are under the direction of Forch Funeral Chapel of Benkelman.

Rachel M. Porter

Rachel Maxine Porter, of Benkelman, died Thursday, October 23, 2008, surrounded by all of her children, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney , Nebraska , at the age of 86 years, 11 months, and 10 days.

She was born November 2, 1921 in Red Willow County , Nebraska to Orie and Emily (Hansen) Bible, the third of 10 children.  Rachel attended country school and was a graduate of Havana High School .  She would often tell about riding to school in a wagon and stopping to pick up other children along the way.  She would go on to tell of the horse, and that after he had been standing all day at school, that once the wagon was loaded again with kids and going home, he would not stop to let the kids off, so they had to jump off the wagon.

On July 31, 1938, Rachel was united in marriage to Arthur Lee Herrick in Oberlin , Kansas .  When they returned home and told their family they had eloped, no one would believe them.  Blessing this union were five children, Eleanor Maxine, Roger Lee, Patsy Mae, Ronald Gene, and Joyce Marye.

After the passing of her husband, Arthur, Rachel met Bert Leonard Porter, and they were later married.

Rachel worked at the Dundy County Hospital for several years, managed the swimming pool, and served as City Clerk in Benkelman for more than 30 years.  After her retirement, she went back to school and became a florist and worked with her daughters at their Benkelman store, Flower Magic.  She loved to make deliveries although it often took a long time because everyone would invite her in for a cup of coffee and a visit.

She loved her family dearly, and was always up for a good game of Rummy Royal when they were all together.  Her house was always open to any friends her children might bring home, and if it were mealtime, she would simply set another plate at the table and welcome the guests to join them.  There was always room for one more, and always room for friends to spend the night.

Rachel also had a passion for sewing.  If one of her girls came home wanting a new dress, Rachel would look at the picture in a catalog, sit down on the kitchen floor and cut a pattern out of newspaper.  Then, using butter knives instead of straight pins, she’d hold the pattern over the fabric as she would carefully cut the cloth.  Within a few days, a new dress would appear, and Rachel would move on her next project.

In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Rachel was active in numerous community organizations.  She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Benkelman, the United Methodist Women, Order of Eastern Star - Holly Chapter No. 233, the Sheba Rebekah Lodge, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Red Hatters.  She was Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star and Past President of the Legion Auxiliary, and served on the Senior Center board for several years as Secretary.

Although she enjoyed being a member of each organization, it was her work with the Rebekah’s that Rachel loved the most.  She held all of the offices on the local level and also served as Assembly President of the Nebraska Lodge.  She then went on to hold offices in the International Rebekah Lodge for several years.

Rachel will be deeply missed by her family and by her community.  She never knew a stranger and cherished time she could spent with her family, her many friends and her neighbors.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Orie and Emily Bible; husbands, Arthur Herrick and Bert Porter; brothers, Richard and Ernie Bible and two infant brothers; sister, Irma (Bible) Adams; and granddaughter, Tamara Rae Balderson.
